These apps will help you stay up to date with Olympic news, and find information and stats on the countries, athletes and events involved in the competition all from the comfort of your smartphone. What more could any Olympics fan want?

London 2012 (iPhone, £0.69)

The London 2012 app, only available on iOS, is full of information about London 2012, and contains an exclusive video section with information about the games and the venues used during the games. If you want an app that will allow you to line up the Olympic experience with London’s geography, the London 2012 app will do just that – and at 69p, it’s cheaper than a can of Coke. In London, at least.

Whether you’re downloading one or a dozen Olympic apps, make sure this is one of them.

BBC Sport (Android, iPhone, Free)

To keep up with official Olympic coverage, make sure you download the BBC app before the games commence. It includes detailed information about the games, and when used with connected TVs will give the audience access to the BBC’s exclusive interactive coverage of the events. If you’re a sports fan in general, it’s also a good plan to keep this one on board after the games are over.

2012 Olympic News (Windows Phone 7, Free)

For those of you who aren’t users of iOS or Android, the options are slightly fewer, but not non-existent. The 2012 Olympic News app for Windows Phone utilises the tile interface of Windows Phone to show Olympic updates side by side with Facebook and Twitter updates so you can keep in touch with Olympic news just the way you would your own personal life.
